Software Engineer (Data)
About us
At Urban Jungle, we’re making insurance fair - to people, planet and wallets. We're one of the fastest-growing businesses in the UK, working to fix one of the biggest industries in the world.
We put customers at the heart of everything we do, using data and technology to make insurance simple, flexible, and affordable.
We care about our impact on the planet, becoming a B Corp in 2022 and offsetting our carbon emissions every year.
So far, we’ve helped 300,000 customers get better insurance and become one of the top-rated home insurance providers in the UK.
We placed 1st in Tempo's 2024 award for best startup to work for, and are in the top 10 of Deloitte’s Fast 50. We’ve raised over £43m in funding to date to help us with our mission.
We’re looking for people to join our team of kind, talented people on a mission to change the insurance industry for good.
About the role
We’re looking for an enthusiastic Software Engineer to join our growing Data team!
We have a strong culture of data-driven decision making at Urban Jungle and we believe in the importance of equipping the wider business with the data they need, when they need it.
We’ve grown fast at Urban Jungle. To achieve our business goals, we need to have our data products scale with our growth.
As a Software Engineer in our data team, we’ll look to you to help build, scale and maintain our data stack through this acceleration of customers and use cases.
Working cross functionally with our Product, Insurance, Commercial and Engineering teams, you’ll help Urban Jungle access all the data we need to drive ourselves forward.
Here's what you'll get up to:
- Develop new data pipelines to get everyone at UJ the data they need to drive us forward. Be it commercial teams pulling the latest numbers on a new product launch or pulling through our latest claims data for insurance.
- Evolve our tooling to keep pace with our scaling by deploying new features to our stack (Kubernetes, dbt, BigQuery, Dagster, Python & Docker) or identifying the latest and greatest ones we need to set up.
- Accelerate our data scientists workflow by setting up automated data pipelines and building and running our MLOps.
- Review code from other engineers and contribute to best practice and pattern design across the engineering and data teams.
- Help drive the quality of our core datasets that we use to make our most important decisions.
- Contribute to the open source tools we are using.
- Champion automation and democratisation of data throughout UJ.
You've read this far! Here's what we're looking for from you:
- This may be your first commercial role, but you have a keen interest in Python and SQL, and can demonstrate your outstanding ability with a range of personal and academic projects.
- You’re interested in mastering Docker, Cloud, Databases and other data technologies.
- You get a thrill out of solving problems - big or small!
- A strong communicator with the ability to present technical concepts to a non-technical audience.
- There’s 101 things we can do in a start-up, but you’ll be able to ruthlessly prioritise the highest impact initiatives.
- You’re not afraid to challenge the status quo if it means reaching a better outcome for our customers.
- You’re a self-confessed tech geek and love to stay up-to-date with the latest trends and technologies.
- You’re ambitious, and eager to progress quickly to grow alongside the company.
- You apply yourself to everything you do, recognising the difference that makes to the business.
- You treat everyone with integrity, respect and kindness - whether it’s your colleagues, our customers, or our partners.
- You’ll be a champion of our values, and encourage others to be the same.
These requirements are a guide as to what we’re looking for, but if you don’t have all of the skills listed above, that’s okay! Please don’t let that hold you back from applying if the role excites you.
