1. Environmental Threats: Wildfires, Heatwaves, and other events

With severe climate conditions marking the summer travel season, understanding exactly how insurance covers environmental disruptions is crucial before you pack your bags:

  • Wildfires Abroad (Travel Insurance): If an unexpected fire breaks out near your resort and disrupts your plans, your travel policy likely handles this under the catastrophe clause. A catastrophe covers environmental crises like fires, floods, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, landslides, avalanches, hurricanes, or severe storms that directly cause your booked accommodation to become completely unusable. If a wildfire forces you to call off the trip or escape home early, your standard cancellation or shortened trip cover may apply. These events abroad can generally only be covered under Travel Insurance policies, so if you have a home policy, cover for your belongings under these circumstances often wouldn't apply.
  • Wildfires at Home (Home Insurance): If a fire threatens your home in the UK, that is an event that may fall under your Home Insurance policy cover.
  • Extreme Heatwaves: A standard travel policy generally doesn’t allow you to cancel your trip because the local weather forecast passes 40°C and you decide you'd rather stay home or cut the trip short. However, if the heat wave causes you to require emergency medical treatment as a result of the heat, your emergency medical cover could step in to handle the medical expenses.

2. Geopolitical Events and Flight Gridlocks

Geopolitical instability continues to influence global flights and therefore holidays. Here is how Travel Insurance policy conditions and exclusions apply to these events:

  • The War Exclusion: Travel insurance is designed to protect against accidental, unforeseen holiday mishaps, meaning for most policies, there is a general exclusion for claims resulting directly or indirectly from active war, terrorism, invasion, civil war, rebellion, revolution, martial law, insurrection, or acts of foreign enemies.
  • Commercial Fuel Crises: While warfare is an exclusion, flight cancellations or flight delays stemming from commercial jet fuel or oil shortages are a different story. While your airline remains your primary port of call for flight gridlocks, if they leave you stranded for over 6 hours without alternative public transport options, your policy may kick in to cover your proportion of unused pre-paid charges.
