FAQs: Does Urban Jungle Home Insurance Cover Shared Houses? Plus Monthly Policies & Mortgage Providers
As a Certified B Corp, Urban Jungle Insurance aims to make understanding your Home Insurance cover as clear and simple as possible.
Below are answers to frequently asked questions about specific living arrangements, such as renting and house shares. We also answer your questions on what it means to pay for your policy monthly or annually, who underwrites our policies, and adding your mortgage lender to your policy (spoiler, you don’t need to).
This article is only applicable to our Contents, Buildings & Contents, Buildings Only and Select By Urban Jungle policies. If you’re unsure about which policy you have, please refer to this article.
1. I live in a shared house, can your Home Insurance cover me?
Contents Insurance
Yes, our Contents policies might be able to cover you if you live with housemates or if you’re a student living in shared accommodation like halls of residence.
At the moment, we can cover houses with up to 6 housemates (total) on our Urban Jungle Contents policy. You can cover just your belongings, or your housemates’ belongings too. You can also protect your landlord’s belongings with Tenants Liability Cover.
If you live in halls of residence (or other similar setups like a care home), we may be able to offer you cover if your room has its own exact address. For example, ‘Room 1, 101 Student Halls, Town Street’.
If the insured address will be the whole property, you don’t need to have locks on your individual room doors. Please note that there is no cover for theft by anyone who is lawfully at the premises (for example anyone else who lives there).
To check if we can cover you, just head to our website and click ‘Get a Quote’ to go through the quote process.
Select by Urban Jungle
With our Select by Urban Jungle policy, when taking out a quote we will ask you how many people are living at the property and what each person’s relationship is to you.
It’s worth noting that we can cover lodgers, but you need to own the house and anyone who lives at the insured property is covered by tenants liability insurance - they don’t need to be named on the policy for this.

2. What is the difference between monthly and annual policies?
This article only applies to our Urban Jungle Contents, Buildings & Contents, Buildings Only and Select By Urban Jungle Policies. If you’re unsure about which policy you have, please refer to this article.
Urban Jungle Insurance
We offer two contract types for our Contents, Buildings & Contents, and Buildings Only Insurance policies - monthly or annual.
Monthly contracts are rolling and renew each month. You can cancel anytime for free, and you won’t be charged for future months.
It’s worth noting, that with a monthly contract, if there is a change in your circumstances, it may affect your cover or premium at your next monthly renewal. If an insurer changes its requirements and isn't able to cover you at your monthly renewal, we'll provide you with notice and resources to help you find alternative cover. You’ll still be able to cancel for free any time.
Our annual contract is a yearly contract that renews every 12 months. You can cancel at any time for free, and if you haven’t made any claims, you'll receive a pro rata refund for any unused months of cover. We’ll send a reminder before your annual renewal. You can choose either monthly or annual when you buy your policy, and you won’t be able to switch between them later. Both options offer the same cover and let you manage or cancel your policy easily online.
Select by Urban Jungle
We offer two payment types for our Select by Urban Jungle insurance policy - monthly or annual. However, whether you pay by monthly or annual instalments, you will have an annual contract.
For either option, if you haven’t made any claims you can cancel at any time for free. You'll receive a pro rata refund for any unused days of cover. We’ll send a reminder before your annual renewal.
You can choose to pay either monthly or annually when you buy your policy, and you won’t be able to switch between them later. Both options offer the same cover and let you manage or cancel your policy easily online, subject to the mentioned claims conditions.

3. How do I know which type of policy I have?
If you’re unsure of what type of policy you have, the best place to start will be to look at your policy documents. The front page of your policy document will say what type of policy you have.
In most cases, you can find your policy documents in the My Account section of our website. Once you’ve logged in, please click “View policy details”. Your policy documents will also have been emailed to you after purchase.
- The “Home Insurance Policies” section of our Help Centre covers our Urban Jungle Contents only, Buildings & Contents, Buildings Only, and Select By Urban Jungle policies.
- The “Travel Insurance Policies” section of our Help Centre covers our Single Trip and Annual Multi Trip Travel policies.
- The “Car Insurance Policies” section of our Help Centre covers our Car Insurance policies.
- The “Other Policies” section of our Help Centre covers policies administered by our partners Paymentshield, and Landlord Insurance policies.
4. Who underwrites your policies?
Our policies are underwritten by some of the largest insurers in the UK and Europe, including but not limited to Canopius, Ageas, and Wakam. You can check which underwriter underwrites the policy you're interested in by checking the example policy document (found on this page).
Some of our policies are administered by our partners Paymentshield and Uinsure. They work with a few different underwriters like Covea, AXA, Ageas, L&G, LV=, RSA, Prestige, UKG & Zurich.
Before you purchase your policy, you can see which of these insurers is underwriting your policy in the Quote Summary.
Once you have bought your policy, you can read your policy documents at any time in the My Account section of our website to check which insurer is underwriting your policy.
5. Can I add a mortgage provider to my Home Insurance policy?
At Urban Jungle, adding an interested party (e.g. a mortgage provider) to your policy isn't something we offer, as it's no longer a requirement following the end of an agreement between the British Bankers Association (BBA) and the Association of British Insurers (ABI) in 2012. For more background on this, see this article.
We do provide all policy information in full in your policy document, which you are able to share with any interested parties - though it’s worth noting that this wouldn’t provide them with protection for the properties they’ve invested in (which is what mortgage providers look for when they ask to be noted on customers’ policies).
If adding an interested party is a requirement for your mortgage, then we might not be the right choice for you and you might need to shop around for your cover. If you’d like to cancel your policy, it is easy to do through our website.
You’ll just need to:
- Log in to the My Account section of our website,
- Click “Manage Policy”,
- Click “Manage renewal or cancel policy”
