What is Non-Standard Home Insurance?

Non-Standard Home Insurance is insurance for houses or circumstances that are a bit different, such as a listed building. This can include different types, like a flat roof, or wall materials like a timber frame. It also may cover various uses of your home, like a holiday let, B&B, Airbnb or having a lodger. Personal circumstances, such as a previous claim or having a vacant property can also be covered.

Buildings & Contents Insurance Buildings Insurance
Buildings & Contents Insurance is both buildings and contents insurance combined. With this type of policy you can get cover for both the structural parts of your home, and the stuff in it. Buildings Insurance gives you cover for the cost of rebuilding your home.

Why “non-standard”?

Standard home insurance policies might not be able to cover all properties - whether due to being an older property, being left unoccupied, or sitting in a flood risk zone. Most British houses have brick walls, and a tiled roof. This won't be the case everywhere but is typically considered standard construction in the UK. However, many older (like Tudor houses) or more modern constructions (like new-build properties) use different wall or roof material types, so the house itself could be considered non-standard.

Your property may also be considered as non-standard due to its occupancy. For example; if the property is left unoccupied for more than 30 days consecutively, used as a UK holiday home or holiday let, or let out to long-term tenants. This can also apply to situations like ongoing building work being carried out at your property.

Personal circumstances, like criminal convictions, bankruptcy or CCJs (County Court Judgements), can also mean you may need non-standard home insurance cover.

Who is non-standard home insurance for?

Non-standard buildings insurance is for homeowners. It covers your building and the structural parts of your home against damage.

If you’re buying your property with a mortgage, your mortgage provider will often require you to have Buildings Insurance in place from the date of exchange.

With Buildings & Contents Insurance you not only get cover for the structural parts of your home, but also the stuff in it under a single combined policy. You also may be able to get cover for a renovation, or if you're doing building works such as building an extension or doing a loft conversion.

You don’t usually need buildings and contents insurance for your home if you’re renting a property. If you are a tenant and want to insure your stuff, check out our Home Contents Insurance.

With our online quote process and easy online account management, Select by Urban Jungle Buildings and Contents Insurance makes it easier to find cover when you have non-standard circumstances.
