What is Car Insurance and what does it cover?

There are three types of Car Insurance:

Fully Comprehensive

                    fastened in a vehicle.

Fully Comprehensive (like Urban Jungle’s Car Insurance) is the highest level of Car Insurance you can have, covering you, your car and anyone else who might be involved in an accident, whether it was your fault or not.

Third Party

A graphic of a car crashing into a motorcycle, between them is an orange explosion.

Third Party is the most basic insurance you need to legally drive on UK roads. It only covers the cost of injury or damage to other people and their property, it does not protect your car or cover medical costs if you’re injured.

Third Party, Fire and Theft

white while the other is orange in colour.

Third Party, Fire and Theft covers the cost of injury or damage to other people and their property, but you’re only protected against fire damage to your car or if your car is stolen.

How does Car Insurance Work?

Car Insurance can provide you cover if you’re involved in an accident, or if your car is stolen, vandalised or catches on fire. Different types of covers have different limits of how much they’d pay out, which usually relate to how much damage has occurred. For example, third party liability has a cover level limit of £20,000,000 but loss of keys has a limit of £300.

on it. On this clip-board there is also an orange pen.

If you make a successful claim on your insurance you will have to pay your excess, this is the amount you pay towards the claim. For example, if you make a claim for £1,000 and your excess is £100, you would receive £900.

Most insurers have a set amount you have to pay, called a compulsory excess, and then allow you to add an extra voluntary excess. Choosing a higher excess can often make your premium cheaper. With Urban Jungle Car Insurance there is no compulsory excess, so you can pick the excess that works for you from as low as £100.

When does my Car Insurance expire?

With Urban Jungle Car Insurance, your policy can be monthly or annual. Both these policy types are set up to auto-renew at the end of each term - so if you don’t turn that option off your Car Insurance shouldn’t expire at all.

Our policies will always have the option to toggle off auto-renew and to make sure you have full control over your insurance, you can cancel at any time for free. Just make sure you have another Car Insurance policy lined up to start!

If you’re wondering why you need another policy lined up, it’s because it’s an offence to leave, use, or let your car be used on roads or in public places in the UK without at least Third Party insurance. If this happens, you could be prosecuted under the Road Traffic Act.

Also, if there’s no record of your car being insured and it’s not declared as off the road (SORN) you could face a fine, prosecution, and your car could be clamped, seized and destroyed.

Who needs Car Insurance?

Legally, you need to have at least third party Car Insurance cover to drive on a road or in a public place in the UK. You also need to have this basic level of cover even if you’re not planning on driving your car.

The only exception for owning a roadworthy car (a car that’s safe to drive) and not having insurance, is if you officially register your car as ‘off the road’ with a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN). You can do this online here.

No Claims Bonus

No claims bonus (NCB), which is sometimes called no claims discount, is usually the number of years you’ve held a motor insurance policy without making a claim.

It can also be possible to keep your NCB even if you’ve made a claim, if you chose to protect your no-claims bonus.

No claims bonus can have an impact on your policy price, with a discount often applied if you have five or more years.

What is Personal Accident Cover on Car Insurance?

Personal Accident Cover is a feature of a Car Insurance policy that can apply if you’re severely injured in a car accident. It is designed to help cover you for financial losses that may occur because of the accident. Depending on the injury you have, you’ll be paid a different amount. For example, if you lost your sight in one eye, you would receive a different amount than if you lost the ability to walk.

Sometimes you might hear it referred to as Personal Injury Cover.

For Personal Accident Cover, most insurers tend to include cover for: loss of sight, permanent loss of limbs, death, and permanent disablement. They’re less likely to cover more minor injuries like bruising or sprains.

Is my car insured?

If you’re looking to get Car Insurance, you may want to do a Car Insurance check to see if your car is already insured and if you’ve met other requirements for driving the car, like having it taxed. A simple way to check if a car is insured is through the Motor Insurance Database (MID). By visiting askMID and entering your car’s number plate you can check your Car Insurance status or not.

If you’re wondering is my car insured and taxed, then after checking ask MID for its insurance status, you can head over to GOV.UK’s tool for checking vehicle tax. For more information on taxing your car and insurance, check out our blog on ‘ Can I tax a car without insurance? '.

What insurance group is my car?

A car’s insurance group provides an indication of what the car’s insurance premium will be. It will be given a group rating from 1 to 50, where the higher the car’s insurance group is, the higher the price of its insurance will be.

The insurance group a car is given indicates the level of risk the car has. So bigger, more expensive and powerful cars tend to have higher insurance groups.

To find out your car’s insurance group you’ll need to know its make and model. You can input that information into any Car Insurance group checking tool online, and it will give you the corresponding group. Alternatively, some tools also use the car’s registration number, so you can use that if you don’t know its make and model.

Can I drive another car on my insurance?

“Driving other cars” or DOC insurance is not something that is always included in standard Car Insurance policies, even if they are fully comprehensive. In the past it wasn’t uncommon for fully comprehensive Car Insurance policies to also provide third-party cover to drive other cars, but this is not seen very often nowadays.

If you’re wondering, can I drive someone else’s car with my insurance, and if you have Driving Other Cars cover, the first place to check is in your Car Insurance policy documents. Otherwise, you can reach out to your insurance provider directly to check. In the meantime, it’s better to assume you aren’t insured to drive other cars before you know for sure.

With an Urban Jungle Car Insurance policy, Driving Other Cars cover can be provided. You can check your policy documents before you buy to see if you are eligible for this cover. Here’s a sample of an Urban Jungle Car Insurance policy document.

Can I pause my Car Insurance?

Because of the 2011 Continuous Insurance Enforcement, it is a legal requirement for any car that hasn’t been declared as SORN must be insured. Many insurance providers do not provide an option to pause or freeze a Car Insurance policy because of this. Instead, to stop your Car Insurance cover for a period and restart it, the usual option is to cancel your policy and get a new one when you want your cover to resume.

It is important to note as well that even if you won’t be driving your car, you may still want some level of Car Insurance, in order to cover it against off-road risks like vandalism, fire and theft.

Urban Jungle’s Car Insurance policies are hassle-free and can be cancelled at any time, with no hidden fees.

Can you have two policies on one car?

It is not currently against the law in the UK to have two Car Insurance policies for one car, but in some cases, your insurance provider may not allow it. For Urban Jungle Car Insurance, there are some situations that you won’t be covered if you have multiple Car Insurance policies. You’ll be able to check on the details of these situation in your policy document.

On top of this, there are several disadvantages to having multiple Car Insurance policies in place. If you had to make a claim on your Car Insurance policies it is very unlikely that you would receive two pay-outs from each of your insurance providers. This is because you wouldn’t be able to claim the entire amount from each provider, and instead they would agree how much they would each pay towards settling your claim. On top of that you would also have your excess deducted from each of the claims.

In addition, if you had two Car Insurance policies for your car, you would have to pay two premiums.

Can you transfer Car Insurance to another car?

If you are getting a new car and selling your old one, you may want to transfer your current Car Insurance policy to your new car. In general, most car insurance providers will allow you to transfer your policy to a different car.

With an Urban Jungle Car Insurance policy it is not currently possible to transfer your Car Insurance to another car.

How much does Car Insurance cost?

Can I drive a van on my Car Insurance?

Most insurance providers’ standard Car Insurance policies will not cover vans, even if they are fully comprehensive. If you are hiring a van, often the rental company will provide temporary insurance to cover you while you are renting it.

Urban Jungle Car Insurance policies do not cover driving vans, but they can provide Driving Other Cars cover.

Can you insure a car you don’t own?

It’s possible to take out a Car Insurance policy for a car that you don’t own, even if it is currently insured by someone else as well. This is often known as a “non-owner” Car Insurance policy. In order to do this, you will generally need to inform your insurance provider that you are not the registered keeper or the owner of the car.

With an Urban Jungle Car Insurance policy it is possible to insure a car you don’t own. To do this, though, you just need to make sure that the registered owner of the car is one of the named drivers added to the policy.

Can you tax a car without insurance?

In order to tax a car your car needs to have both an MOT and to be insured. So, you’ll need to make sure you have Car Insurance before taxing your car, otherwise when it is checked against the Motor Insurance Database it will register as not being insured and you will be unable to tax it.
